Universities are increasingly expected not only to deliver subject knowledge but to prepare students for increasingly complex global challenges. Sustainability, artificial intelligence, climate change, digital transformation, public health and social inequality all require an interdisciplinary approach.
This is why interdisciplinary teaching and learning matters more than ever.
Interdisciplinary education is not simply about combining multiple subjects into one module or project. At its best, it encourages students to connect ideas across boundaries, integrate different forms of knowledge and engage with real-world complexity. Drawing on my work across scientific research, sustainability and education, four approaches have helped me support meaningful interdisciplinary learning.
Use real-world problems
One of the most powerful aspects of interdisciplinary teaching is its ability to connect learning to authentic global issues.
Students often engage more meaningfully when they can see the relevance and purpose of what they are learning beyond the immediate requirements of an assessment or classroom activity. Topics such as sustainability, healthcare, ethical innovation, urban development and environmental change naturally encourage interdisciplinary thinking because they involve scientific, social, cultural, political and economic dimensions simultaneously.
When students explore real problems, learning becomes more active and reflective. Rather than memorising isolated information, they are encouraged to ask deeper questions such as: why does this problem exist? What knowledge do we need? What evidence supports possible solutions? Why do experts disagree? What trade-offs exist between different solutions? How might different disciplines interpret the same issue differently?
These questions encourage critical thinking and help students recognise the complexity of contemporary challenges.
Importantly, interdisciplinary learning also allows students to see how knowledge is created, debated and applied in practice. Research-informed teaching can be especially valuable here. Integrating current research, industry challenges and real-world case studies into teaching helps students connect theory with lived reality.
Students become more motivated when they understand how classroom learning links to wider social and environmental challenges. They begin to see themselves not only as learners within a discipline but as future professionals capable of contributing to solutions.
Foster inclusive teaching
While interdisciplinary education can be highly engaging, it can also feel overwhelming. It requires students to navigate unfamiliar concepts, specialist terminology and different disciplinary approaches simultaneously.
This makes inclusive teaching essential.
Students enter higher education with diverse educational backgrounds, cultures, levels of confidence and previous experiences. Some students feel comfortable navigating uncertainty and open-ended inquiry, while others might struggle with unfamiliar expectations or academic conventions.
Inclusive interdisciplinary teaching is therefore not about lowering standards. Instead, it is about removing unnecessary barriers that prevent students from participating fully.
Clear communication matters enormously. Students benefit from transparent expectations, scaffolded learning, formative feedback, practical examples and opportunities to build confidence progressively.
Small interventions can make a significant difference. For example, clarifying academic language, explaining disciplinary assumptions or creating supportive peer learning environments can help students engage more confidently with complex interdisciplinary tasks.
Importantly, inclusive teaching benefits all students, not only those who initially appear less confident. When learning environments become clearer, more accessible and more supportive, everyone benefits.

Nurture belonging
Students are more likely to participate actively when they feel respected, included and connected to their learning communities. This becomes especially important within interdisciplinary environments where students might feel uncertain about their expertise or academic identity.
Interdisciplinary learning often requires students to step outside familiar disciplinary boundaries. Although this can feel intellectually exciting, it can also create vulnerability. Students might worry about not knowing enough or feel uncertain about how their perspectives fit within broader discussions.
Creating a sense of belonging therefore becomes central to successful learning.
Supportive feedback cultures, collaborative learning, approachable teaching and peer mentoring can all strengthen student confidence and engagement. Interdisciplinary education works best when students feel safe to ask questions, test ideas, make mistakes and learn from one another.
Designing better futures through interdisciplinary education
Perhaps most importantly, interdisciplinary teaching encourages educators to think differently about the purpose of higher education.
Universities are not only preparing students for employment. They are also shaping how future generations understand responsibility, innovation, collaboration and social change. Traditional higher education models have often prioritised content delivery and disciplinary specialisation. Although disciplinary expertise remains important, future graduates will increasingly need broader capabilities to cope with uncertainty and change.
The same care we apply to the design of research projects, technologies or professional systems should also apply to the design of learning environments. If we want more sustainable, ethical, inclusive and innovative futures, we must intentionally create educational experiences that support those values.
Interdisciplinary education is not a silver bullet for the challenges facing higher education. However, it offers an important framework for helping students engage with complexity in thoughtful, collaborative and human-centred ways.
In an increasingly interconnected world, perhaps one of the most valuable things educators can do is help students learn not only how to specialise but how to connect.
