Students preparing to enter today’s workforce are navigating complex academic pathways while gaining first-hand experience, building professional networks and developing competitive skills. In response, we’ve been rethinking student success and outcomes not just as a stand-alone function, but as an ecosystem that supports students from the beginning of their academic journey to beyond graduation.
Our university’s Career Connections Center (C3) provides a replicable model for how this can be done. Its approach is built not around a single office, but around an ecosystem that integrates student success into a shared framework for career readiness and post-graduation outcomes.
Instil career readiness early on and create touchpoints
One of the most practical moves institutions can make is introducing career readiness before students even begin classes. Here, students are first introduced to career preparedness and readiness support during the “Preview” orientation programme for new students and families. As they learn about our campus resources, students also discuss personal and professional goals.
Early awareness is just the beginning. What distinguishes our ecosystem approach is continuity and integration. Students continue their career development alongside their academic journey by harnessing the C3’s resources including major exploration, drop-in career planning, company career treks and career fairs.
The C3 team also collaborates with faculty to integrate career readiness into the overall academic experience. This helps students connect foundational concepts with practical applications to position them for career success. Our team also collaborates with employers in the development of experiential learning and recruitment events, which draw on a comprehensive framework to promote networking, skills development and a successful recruiting experience for all participants.
Cultivating partnerships that design engaging opportunities
Large career fairs remain a pivotal part of student engagement, but we have learned that participation alone does not always translate into outcomes.
The next step was simple but effective: build follow-up guidance into the post-fair experience. Automated email communications guided our students on suggested next steps following the career fair. The high engagement rate with these emails (an open rate of nearly 98 per cent) suggests that students are willing to take the next step when clear guidance is provided.
For other institutions, our suggestion is not to expand into endless communication, but to expand upon existing opportunities and build a coherent sequence of events that makes sense for the student’s career path.
Use data and technology to inform improvement
An ecosystem requires collaboration, and sometimes that collaboration is with numbers. We track student engagement across categories including professional development, experiential learning and post-graduation outcomes.
Technology also plays a supporting role in offering career services to students. For us, AI-powered tools can handle tasks like résumé and interview feedback, which has allowed for the scaling of on-demand services to students. In addition, investment in platforms to integrate with our existing university tools and showcase student experiences have strengthened the value of a University of Florida degree.
This includes the recently launched comprehensive learner record, the Gator Experience Record. This university-wide tool tracks academic courses and co-curricular activities supporting student learning. It demonstrates the connection between experiential learning, skill development and how students can clearly articulate their efforts in a meaningful way to future employers, graduate schools and their professional networks. We are the largest institution to launch a Comprehensive Learner Record to scale across the university with 37,000 records.
The value lies in how quickly this information can be used. Rather than relying on retrospective reporting to plan improvements for future semesters, the university adjusts its strategies as soon as the data is readily available. This leads to a shorter feedback loop and more targeted interventions and assistance when needed.
Categorise areas, not just majors
Assuming that a student’s major will define their career outcome is a common barrier in career development. We address this through the C3’s Career Pathways model, which groups professional opportunities into broad industry clusters like STEM, artificial intelligence and health sciences, rather than singular academic tracks.
This approach allows students to explore roles beyond their immediate major, prioritise skill building and acknowledges the reality that many graduates will move across sectors and industries throughout their professional careers.
Framing career readiness as adaptability, rather than permanent placement, better prepares students for success in work, citizenship and life.
Ensure universal access to resources
A career ecosystem must be accessible to all students. Practical obstacles, including the cost of professional attire or limited exposure to networks, can prevent students from taking full advantage of their university experience.
Targeted initiatives to address these gaps help ensure that all students can take part in professional advancement opportunities. At the C3, Career Treks, the Thrive Experiential Learning Scholarship and the Molm Family Gator Closet are among the resources and initiatives that allow all students to choose their own professional journey or roadmap while lowering the worries of financial barriers.
Leave room for adaptability
It is important for institutions to include career readiness as a return on investment when it comes to the value of a degree. A more effective approach is to focus on whether students are graduating feeling equipped with competencies, skills, networks and tools needed to thrive in a global community, while they adapt to an evolving workforce.
Our model centres on this much broader definition of success. By integrating career readiness across the institution, inside and outside the classroom, using data to guide decisions in real time and ensuring equitable access to all resources, it creates a system that supports employment readiness and career sustainability.
For institutions looking to strengthen their approach, the takeaway is clear: career readiness is not simply a service to be offered. It is a system to be built, maintained and continuously refined to elevate the value of your degrees.
