What future-proofing a course really means

Is an online course future-proof because someone has guessed the future correctly? No. Nor is it future-proof because it can be endlessly patched. It is future-proof when the design is strong enough to cope with change.

Links die. Readings date. Professional standards shift. Platforms change. Students arrive with different expectations, needs and levels of digital confidence. Artificial intelligence has moved from novelty to routine before many course teams agreed what to do about it.

Of course, no course team can predict all of this in advance. But teams can design online courses that are easier to update, easier to access and more likely to remain meaningful when the context changes.

In my recent research with my colleague France Barth, we explored how learning designers in higher education understand and practise future-proofing in online course design. What emerged was not a single recipe, but a set of practical design habits that course teams can use.

Start with a course structure that others can understand

Future-proofing begins with clarity.

A course that only makes sense to the person who built it is vulnerable. When that person moves role, changes project or simply forgets why something was designed in a particular way, the course becomes harder to maintain.

Course teams can reduce this risk by using consistent page structures, clear naming conventions, shared templates and simple documentation. This is not glamorous work, but it is what allows future colleagues to understand the design without becoming educational archaeologists.

A useful test is: could someone unfamiliar with the course see how it is organised, where key materials sit, what students are expected to do each week and why the main learning activities are there?

When the answer is yes, future updating becomes much easier.

Design in blocks, not in knots

Many online courses become difficult to update because everything is too tightly connected. A reading links to a lecture. The lecture links to a quiz. The quiz refers to an assessment brief. The assessment brief refers back to the lecture. Change one part and three others wobble.

A more adaptable approach is to design in blocks.

This does not mean chopping learning into lifeless fragments. It means creating course components that have a clear purpose and can be reviewed or replaced without breaking the whole course. A case study, discussion activity, short video, practice task or assessment preparation page can be designed as a distinct element within a coherent learning journey.

When a professional standard changes, a tool is replaced or an example becomes outdated, the team can update the relevant block rather than redesigning the entire module.

The practical question is: which parts of this course are most likely to date, and have we made them easy to refresh?

Build accessibility in before anyone asks for it

A course is not future-proof if some students cannot access it properly.

Accessibility is often treated as something to fix after the main design work has been completed. That is inefficient for staff and unfair to students. It also misunderstands what inclusive design is for. Captions, transcripts, alt text, readable layouts, mobile-friendly pages, low-bandwidth options and flexible routes through materials are not optional extras – they are part of the course design.

Designing for access from the start also makes courses more resilient. Students may be studying on different devices, in different time zones, with different internet connections, caring responsibilities, disabilities or working patterns. The more a course assumes one ideal learner in one ideal context, the more fragile it becomes.

A simple design prompt is: what would stop a student from participating in this activity, and can we remove that barrier before the course opens?

Keep content current without rebuilding everything

Future-proofing does not mean creating content that will never date. Very little content works that way.

Instead, course teams can plan for renewal. This means identifying review points, assigning responsibility for updates and separating stable concepts from fast-changing examples.

For example, a theory, framework or core principle may remain useful for several years, while the industry example, policy context or technology demonstration around it may need regular revision. Designing these elements separately makes refreshing easier.

Mark particular pages or activities as “high refresh” areas. These could include current case studies, legal or policy references, software demonstrations, employability examples or AI-related guidance. They can then be checked routinely, rather than discovered by students after they have become stale.

The guiding question is: what in this course needs to stay stable and what needs a planned route for change?

Make assessment meaningful beyond the module

The most expansive understanding of future-proofing in our study was linked to employability and authentic practice.

This does not mean every course should become narrowly vocational. It means students should be able to see how the knowledge, skills and judgement they develop might matter beyond the assessment deadline.

Authentic assessment can help. Have students produce a policy briefing, project plan, reflective portfolio, data interpretation, design proposal, professional communication, public-facing explanation or other output that resembles work done beyond university. The exact format will vary by discipline, but the principle is the same: students practise using knowledge in ways that carry value outside the module.

A helpful prompt is: does this assessment only measure whether students understood the course, or does it also help them practise doing something meaningful with that understanding?

Use AI for support, not as a substitute for design

AI can help with some future-proofing tasks: support checking for broken links, flagging outdated terminology, summarising changes in a field or helping teams compare older and newer versions of content.

But AI is not a replacement for educational judgement. It cannot decide what a course is for, what students need, what should count as meaningful learning, or how to balance accessibility, academic integrity and employability. It can support review processes, but humans still need to decide what is pedagogically appropriate.

The useful question is not “How can we add AI to this course?” but “Which course maintenance or review tasks could AI support safely, transparently and under human oversight?”

Treat future-proofing as course life-cycle work

The biggest shift is to stop seeing future-proofing as a one-off redesign project.

Courses need ordinary, scheduled attention. Small, regular, evidence-informed updates are usually better than waiting until a course needs major repair. Analytics, student feedback, staff reflection and quality review can all help identify where change is needed.

This also means bringing learning designers into the conversation early. If they are only asked to “put content online” after key decisions have been made, many opportunities for adaptable, inclusive and sustainable design have already been lost.

Future-proofing is not prediction work. It is design work. It asks course teams to build online learning that can endure, evolve and continue to make sense for the students who arrive next.
